Fire a chart at the colour you need

Choose a target in CMYK, RGB or Lab, or pick it from Illustrator's colour books, including the Pantone libraries. Color Shotgun makes a chart of swatches around that colour, from 3 steps (27 swatches) up to 11 steps (1,331 swatches), with an on-screen preview as you set it up.

Zero in on the match

Print the chart, hold it next to the sample and pick the closest swatch. Then use it as the new target with a finer range and print again. A few rounds and you have the formula that matches on your printer and your media, even when the profile isn't right for it.

Charts that make sense

Two chart types, one for greys and neutrals and one sorted by hue, and an Auto mode that picks the right one. Ranges go from fine to coarse with presets, or set the exact range and the Delta E step for each Lab or LCh value in Advanced mode.

Know what you're looking at

Each swatch shows how far it is from the target (Delta E, with your choice of formula), a gamut warning marks colours your printer can't reach, and the output lists each swatch's input and output values. A colour control wedge checks the printer's condition on the same print. Colours follow Illustrator's own colour settings.

Your layout, your output

Set the swatch size, spacing and labels, choose RGB or CMYK output, and export the chart to PDF with your PDF presets, ready for the RIP.
